Welcome

The Flight of the Earls Cycle

On June 29th 2008 a group of Irish cyclists left northern France in attempt to retrace the historical route of the Flight of the Earls, with the hope making it all the way to Rome. The group aim to be the first to undertake such a journey by bike. In doing so the group intend to raise money for the Irish Cancer Society. On July 20th, against the odds, they made it. Click here for details.

Now here's the important point about the money we raise. All of the money you give to this fundraiser will be given straight to the ICS. What we mean by that is as this is our undertaking, all flights, accommodation, food, gear etc. will come out of our own pockets, no exceptions.

"So, how far is it? Where does it go? How long will it take? And why the hell are you doing it?"

Well, on hearing about the Flight of the Earls Cycle we've undertaken, chances are that at least one of the above questions popped into your head. So, the purpose of this website then is to simply answer, and answer simply, these questions as well as allowing you to support the Irish Cancer Society.

So why retrace the route of the Flight of the Earls? The Flight was "destined to be probably the most momentous event in the history of the island of Ireland." Everyone has heard about the Flight of the Earls and with the 400th centenary of the arrival of the Earls in Rome, we thought that we would have a challenge that captures the imagination - it's something different.

If this idea has caught your imagination and if you want to support the work of the Irish Cancer Society, then please make a donation here. We really appreciate all donations. Thanks for taking the time to have a look and spare a thought for us in July as we struggled over the St. Gotthardpass in the Alps!

Thank you.

1. How far?
The route will be over 2,200km (or 1,300 miles).

2. From where to where?
We will start from Quillebeuf which is just outside Le Havre in Northern France. Then to Louvain in Belgium and southwards. After crossing the Swiss Alps into Italy, it's onwards to Rimini on the Adriatic coast and then veer south over the Apennines and into Rome.

3. How long?
Averaging 100km (60 miles) a day we hope the journey will only take 22 days. For a more detailed description of the route have a look at the Route Profile.
